A romantic comedy about loss, love, change and redemption, The Clean House (Pulitzer Prize finalist & winner of The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize) is a whimsical and touching work about the big themes of love, life, and death. A serious career-oriented doctor, Lane, has hired a quirky Brazilian maid. The only problem is that the maid, Matilde, hates to clean. Instead, she longs to be a comedienne. This funny, tender play has screwy poetry and penetrating wisdom, oddball humor, deadpan soap, operatic arias, fantasy, spirituality and a soaring sense of romance, reminding us that there is humour and beauty to be found in lifes most unlikely messes.
“…a gorgeous production that fully taps its tart humor, theatrical audacity and emotional richness… a play that keeps revealing surprising insights, whimsical images and layers of rich feeling as it goes along.” —NY Times
