Dief the Chief: October 1962!

Betsy Johnson

Facebook Live Event (but you don’t need a FB account to access the show)

July 24, 2020 8pm

Starring Peter James Haworth as John Diefenbaker
Pierre Brault as Tremblay
Broadcast Direction by AL Connors

Late October 1962. Soviet ships are charging the American blockade around Cuba. The entire world is on the brink of thermonuclear war. Meanwhile, in Canada, Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, is enjoying a majority government, record popularity and a lovely fall day picking flowers with his wife. All that changes with the arrival of a personal letter from J.F. Kennedy.

Join Dief the Chief as he navigates his way through the ultimate crisis that could see neighbours on both sides fight a nuclear war with Canada, literally in the middle. The personal cost to him will be great as he deals with a demanding President, a divided cabinet, and a fierce opposition.

“Enthralling ” “A riveting study.” Patrick Langston — Artsfile

“Brault’s masterful script moves seamlessly between dry humour and pathos, and the sheer terror of nuclear annihilation. Brault’s best work as a playwright. And that’s saying a lot.” Barb Popel — Apt613

“One of (Brault’s) best pieces. Consistently interesting, and insightful, splendidly capturing both Dief’s witticism’s and eccentricities.” Jaime Portman — Capital Critics Circle.
