The play takes place in Greece, 404 B.C. during the last days of the Peloponnesian War. Two city states, once allies, now sworn enemies – on one side, Athens; resplendent in art, culture and democracy. On the other, Sparta; militaristic, austere and ruthless. In the middle of this we find Kaphalos of Argolis, former Spartan soldier, now disgraced for cowardice. Like most Spartans, his life is rigid, strict and conformist and while outwardly appearing to comply with Spartan values, Kaphalos hides a secret…he loves art, especially the theatre. His favourite playwright is Dorion of Laconia, a decorated Spartan general who appears have gone mad and is now writing comedies which are performed in secret, where slave and master come together to watch and laugh.
Art in Sparta is essentially forbidden as being wasteful and dangerous. Dorion is arrested and faces certain execution and Kaphalos is shocked to learn that he has been appointed to defend him at his trial.
The Last Spartan asks, how important is Art to a society? Are artists better at interpreting and preserving history than Historians? How will a culture be remembered if it has no art to interpret?
Multi-award-winning actor and playwright Pierre Brault, creator of Blood on the Moon, Portrait of an Unidentified Man and last year’s hit, Will Somers: Keeping your Head, portrays multiple characters in this homage to his two greatest loves; history and the theatre.
“Peopled with richly drawn characters and situations, alternately very funny and a stern
warning… Pierre Brault’s newest work stands to rank among his best solo pieces. He pivots
between the characters and settings in riveting fashion… His theme — that art enriches our
lives, embodies history that would otherwise be lost and is essential to democracy because it
debates important issues — rings with clarity but never clamours.”
Patrick Langston, ARTSFILE“Playwright, instigator, and actor Pierre Brault brings all of his considerable talents to this heady
mix of well-researched storytelling. The Last Spartan is commandingly performed, eminently
entertaining and a must see.”
LAURIE FYFFE, Capital Critics Circle“It’s easy to get caught up in the historical accuracy or the masterful acting, but the themes
tackled in The Last Spartan are of equal importance in making this a must-see play.”
Ryan Pepper-Capital Critics Circle“The Last Spartan is a timely and compelling historical drama brought wonderfully to life by
Brault’s unassailable acting chops…I heartily recommend you see it now if you can.”
Ian Huffman-New Ottawa Critics“All that’s needed now is comedy, and this play has it in helmetfuls. This is the genius
performance those savvy fans came to see. I guess I’m one of them now.”
