Does the mention of the 1950s stir memories of hula-hoops and American Bandstand? Do Go-Go boots, Motown tunes and love beads take you back to the 1960s? Then Roger Bean’s award-winning musical comedy The Marvelous Wonderettes is guaranteed to have you step back in time to the days of crinolines, cat eyeglasses and sock hops. The Marvelous Wonderettes is a tribute to the girl-group sound of the ’50s and ’60s, featuring iconic songs that range from comic to poignant, including such classics as Mr. Sandman, Stupid Cupid, It’s in His Kiss, Leader of the Pack and Rescue me.
Synopsis
The show revolves around The Wonderettes, four girls who are members their High School’s Songleader squad. When the entertainment for the 1958 senior prom is suddenly unable to perform, The Wonderettes are called upon as a last-minute replacement. As the girls perform at their prom and compete for the title of Prom Queen, we learn about their hopes, dreams, and heartaches. In the second act, The Wonderettes re-unite in 1968 for the class’ ten-year reunion. The girls’ lives have taken very different directions and their relationships have had ups and downs. In the end true friendship endures, as is the case whatever the generation.
All profits from the show will be donated to The Catholic Education Foundation (CEFO), a registered charity, whose objective is to counter the effects of poverty on students within the English Catholic schools in the City of Ottawa.
